3D / 4D Ultrasound Machines Questions & Answers

Currently 3D/4D machines are used only in ob/gyn practices and cardiac studies. There is no use for 3D/4D in evaluating vascular studies and organs such as the liver and kidneys.
Although many manufacturers are producing machines with modern technologies such as color, CW, and PW, one cannot assume when purchasing a machine that it will have these features. In order to keep prices down, manufacturers are producing machines with basic ultrasound capabilities and using these features as add-ons.
Almost all machines manufactured today have a storage and transfer function called DICOM. Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is a standard for handling, storing, printing, and transmitting information in medical imaging. It includes a file format definition and a network communications protocol.
Ultrasound machines are essentially computers. They have hard drives, memory, video cards, RAM, and so forth. However, like a computer, these images must be transferred periodically to a backup device or stored on DVDs/CDs. Many practices make the mistake of storing information on their ultrasound machine indefinitely, thus slowing down the system. By law, every record must be backed up for at least 7 years, so external duplicate records are essential.
