EKG / ECG Machines Questions & Answers

Learn here about the standard features and new developments in EKG/ECG machines:

An EKG/ECG is an electrocardiogram test that monitors and checks for problems with the electrical activity of the heart.
There actually is no difference between an EKG and ECG. Both terms are an abbreviation of electrocardiogram.
A 12 channel EKG prints a full-page report, while a 3 channel EKG only shows rhythm strips. The 12 channel EKGs are the preferred units for hospital use, while 3 channel EKGs are reserved for portable units. The 3 channel EKGs are commonly used by EMS and ambulance crews.
An interpretative EKG is an automatic, computerized diagnostic function of the machine, as opposed to a non-interpretive EKG that is not generated automatically and is read by a human. Regardless of the report method, there is a standard protocol for reading all EKGs which includes interpreting measurements, rhythm analysis, conduction analysis, and waveform description. The standard steps in EKG analysis are critical in EKG tracing in order to capture subtle abnormalities.
EKG/ECG technology really has not changed in the last decade. While new features such as data transmission for EMR (electronic medical records) have been added, the basic function of tracing the electrical activity of the heart has remained unchanged.
By collecting data of multiple EKG/ECG tracings over a longer period of time (about 20 minutes) and interpreting several hundred cardiac cycles, a signal-averaged EKG/ECG is able to detect subtle abnormalities in the heart activity. These abnormalities can be indicative of a higher risk for cardiac arrhythmias, so a signal-averaged EKG/ECG can be a life-saving feature.
